TMJ Disorder Treatment
Services
Jaw pain, frequent headaches, clicking or popping, and difficulty chewing can all interfere with your daily routine. At Dr. Reagan Smith's Kingwood practice, we carefully evaluate jaw pain and create practical treatment plans to relieve discomfort, improve function, and protect your teeth.

TMJ disorders affect the temporomandibular joints that connect your jaw to your skull, as well as the muscles surrounding them. Symptoms can vary from person to person, which is why treatment starts with understanding what is contributing to your discomfort.
Our team uses a focused exam, along with tools such as Digital X-rays and an intraoral scanner when appropriate. We explain what we find, review your treatment options, and monitor your progress over time.
What Are Common Symptoms of TMJ Disorder?
TMJ disorders can cause symptoms in the jaw, face, head, and surrounding muscles. Common signs may include:
- Jaw pain or tenderness
- Clicking or popping when opening or closing your mouth
- Jaw stiffness or limited movement
- Difficulty or discomfort while chewing
- Headaches
- Ear pressure
- Jaw locking
- Tooth wear related to clenching or grinding
Symptoms can have different causes, so an evaluation can help determine which treatment options may be appropriate.
Why Treat TMJ Problems Early?
Persistent jaw discomfort can affect eating, sleeping, and everyday activities. It may also contribute to ongoing muscle strain or wear on the teeth, particularly for patients who clench or grind.
During your evaluation, Dr. Reagan Smith looks at how your jaw opens and closes, checks for joint sounds and muscle tenderness, and evaluates signs of dental wear. We may also discuss habits that can contribute to jaw strain, including posture, prolonged phone use, and periods of increased stress.
Early evaluation can help identify contributing factors and give you practical strategies for managing symptoms before they become more disruptive.
How Is TMJ Disorder Diagnosed?
Diagnosis begins with a focused history and physical examination. We ask about your symptoms, including jaw pain, headaches, ear pressure, chewing discomfort, and sleep quality.
Dr. Reagan Smith may evaluate:
- Jaw movement and range of motion
- Clicking, popping, or locking
- Tenderness in the jaw muscles
- Tooth wear or signs of clenching and grinding
- How your teeth come together
When appropriate, Digital X-rays can provide additional information about your teeth and surrounding structures. An Intraoral Scanner can also create a detailed digital record of your teeth and bite.
We review the findings with you and explain the next steps in clear terms.
How Is TMJ Disorder Treated?
TMJ treatment depends on your symptoms and the factors contributing to them. Whenever appropriate, we begin with conservative, reversible approaches.
Treatment may include:
- Custom nightguards to protect teeth from clenching or grinding
- Guided jaw exercises
- Strategies for reducing muscle strain
- Bite adjustments when appropriate
- Dental restorations when changes to damaged or worn teeth are needed
- Coordination with physical therapists or oral pain specialists when additional care is appropriate
The goal is to reduce discomfort, improve comfortable jaw movement, and protect your teeth while avoiding unnecessary treatment.
Can a Nightguard Help With TMJ Symptoms?
For some patients, a custom nightguard may help protect the teeth from the effects of nighttime clenching or grinding and reduce strain associated with those habits.
We use the Intraoral Scanner to create a detailed digital model of your teeth when a custom appliance is recommended. The design and material of the nightguard are selected based on your bite and individual needs.
Your response is monitored during follow-up visits so adjustments can be made when necessary.
When Are Bite Adjustments or Restorations Recommended?
Not every patient with TMJ symptoms needs changes to their bite or dental restorations. These treatments are considered only when the examination shows that they may contribute to a more comfortable or stable bite.
When a restoration is appropriate, CEREC technology allows us to create certain fitted dental restorations efficiently, often reducing the number of visits needed.
Dr. Reagan Smith will explain why a restoration or bite adjustment is being recommended and how it fits into your overall treatment plan.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Your first visit focuses on understanding your symptoms and identifying possible causes.
A typical appointment may include:
- A review of your symptoms and health history
- An examination of your jaw movement and muscles
- Evaluation of your teeth and bite
- Digital X-rays or intraoral scans, when needed
- Discussion of habits that may contribute to jaw strain
- A personalized treatment plan and follow-up recommendations
You will also receive practical guidance you can use at home. Depending on your needs, this may include jaw exercises, changes to daily habits, or instructions for using a nightguard.
Follow-up visits allow us to evaluate your progress and make adjustments to your treatment plan when needed.
When Should You See a Dentist for Jaw Pain?
Consider scheduling an evaluation if jaw pain is persistent, interferes with chewing or sleep, or occurs along with symptoms such as frequent headaches, locking, stiffness, or significant clicking.
Because jaw pain can have multiple causes, an examination can help determine whether your symptoms are related to the TMJ, surrounding muscles, your teeth, or another issue that may require additional care.
